THE CHALLENGES OF MUSICAL Theatre During a Pandemic

MARILYN PARADA

When the pandemic happened, this affected the Musical Theatre department greatly since unfortunately, we weren't able to express our love and joy for musical theatre in person as we were always used to doing. During this fall semester, however, I had the opportunity to showcase my love for singing and performing through the Cabaret Performance Workshop course. Although it wasn't in person I was able to still show the world my progress and work. I also gained many new skills, such as video editing and directing my videos, and coming up with how I should film and act in these videos. This wasn’t easy at first but with the help of Professor Burrier and Professor Plant, they have helped me adapt to this new form of theatre during the fall semester.

This performance I did is a song called “Taylor The Latte Boy”. This song is a comedic song that represents what it is like to have a big crush on a person you have just met and want to know more about. When working on this song in my Cabaret Performance Workshop course, my professor would challenge what I am trying to convey to the audience, such as having me write a verb for every phrase that I sang to help me connect the song in its entirety. She would also give me notes everytime I would perform this song for the class over Zoom, such as playing around with some phrases and different suggestions on how I could approach certain parts of this song.
