"The Pirate King"
from Mville's G&S Deconstructed
LAYLA VAFIADIS
I had the pleasure of creating [this video] over the 2020 pandemic as a part of Manhattanville’s Musical Revue. With the help of my very caring and patient (haha) roommates, my vision of “The Pirate King'' was brought to life in a safe, contained, and clean way. It was such a rewarding experience from beginning to end- buying costumes, swords, planning featured places around campus, and finding a way to gender bend a musical theater role AND modernize it for a contemporary audience. The past year was a dark time for so many, and in that looking back I am so thankful to have gotten the opportunity to create art in any capacity, and better yet being able to share the experience with those close to me.

Layla Vafiadis is a junior here at Manhattanville College, double majoring in Musical Theater and Sociology. Layla created this short video/film with the help of her dorm-mates during the pandemic in 2020 as a part of the Musical Theater departments' Musical Revue titled, "G & S Deconstructed". She faced the challenge of gender-bending the role of "The Pirate King", as well as attempting to modernize the storyline for a contemporary audience, while also achieving an 'old film' look.
